MBI arrests Kansas child molestation suspect

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Mississippi Bureau of Investigation agents have arrested 46-year-old James Alan Penn, who is wanted in Bonner Springs, Kansas. He was arrested at a Magee home and is charged with molesting three children ages nine and under.

"We developed information that Penn was in Mississippi and were able to locate the suspect in Magee," said MBI Director Lt. Col. Larry Waggoner. "Agents took the suspect into custody without incident and he is awaiting extradition to Bonner Springs, Kansas."

Simpson Co. authorities say oil spill contained

SIMPSON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Simpson County Sheriff Kenneth Lewis said an oil spill at Denbury Oil Company has been contained.

Lewis told us 20 barrels of crude oil spilled Saturday from oil wells at the facility.

The sheriff's department received the call around 6 p.m.

Lewis said the oil did not reach the Strong River or damage any residences.

The Department of Environmental Quality and other cleanup agencies were at the scene.

The facility is located at 635 Layton Jones Road in Simpson County.

Governor Bryant orders flags to fly half-staff to honor Rep. Upshaw

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Governor Phil Bryant issued an executive order on Thursday ordering state flags on Mississippi buildings and grounds to be flown at half-staff Saturday.

The flags are at half staff in honor of state Representative Jessica Upshaw who died Sunday, March 24, from what authorities say was an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Upshaw's body was found at the home of former Mississippi State Rep. Clint Rotenberry in Mendenhall.

Mom accused of allowing sexual abuse of daughter

A Simpson County mom is accused of allowing her teenage daughter to be sexually abused.

SIMPSON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now)- A Simpson County mom is accused of allowing her teenage daughter to be sexually abused. Tanya McAlister has been indicted on a charge of felony neglect and has posted $10,000 bond.

The accused molester is Gary Bates. Bates was first indicted in September on a sexual battery of a female child under the age of 14 charge. He was indicted again last week, along with McAlister.

District Attorney Daniel Jones said the case against Bates and McAlister is strong. Bates remains in the Simpson County jail.

Rotenberry: She had to fight depression every day

Former Mississippi State Rep. Clint Rotenberry says Jessica Upshaw had battled depression for many years.

SIMPSON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Former Mississippi State Rep. Clint Rotenberry says State Rep. Jessica Upshaw had battled depression for many years. Rotenberry told WLBT he and Upshaw were dating, and she was at his home Sunday when she took her life.

"She has been under the care of a psychiatrist, a counselor," said Rotenberry. "She goes through group therapy, she's such a fighter. She would have to get up and fight the depression every day."

Hattiesburg man killed in Simpson Co. crash

SIMPSON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now)- A Hattiesburg man was killed in a one-vehicle crash on highway 469 in Simpson County Tuesday night.

According to Cpl. Odis Easterling with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, 50-year-old Paul Gordon was traveling southbound on Highway 469 just north of Blueberry Road around 9:15 p.m. when his 1994 Geo Tracker ran off the road to the right and overturned.

Gordon, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle, according to Easterling. Gordon was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
