The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) Public Transit Division will be holding a community town hall meeting in Hazlehurst to address ways to increase participation in and enhance awareness of the benefits of public transit programs to area residents.

Jackson man killed in Simpson County crash

A Jackson man was killed in a one-vehicle accident in Simpson County Tuesday night.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. on Highway 43 south of Mendenhall, says Cpl. Odis Easterling with the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol.

A 1996 Ford explorer driven by 46-year-old Glen Barnes of Jackson reportedly ran off the road to the right, over corrected, ran off the left side of the road and then overturned.

Easterling said Barnes was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene.

Accident closes northbound lanes of I-55

COPIAH COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A serious traffic accident in Copiah County closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 55 near Wesson Wednesday morning. A tanker truck, a pickup truck, a van, and a sedan are involved, but it's not clear yet exactly how it happened.

One northbound lane reopened to traffic around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, but there was still a significant backup.

The accident is one mile south of the Martinsville exit.

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - MDOT has a new website that allows you to monitor traffic utilizing over 400 cameras across the state. With a state of the art upgrade to the system, it's now possible to create your own route to avoid potential traffic delays.

From a control center on North West Street, in Jackson, the Mississippi Department of Transportation can now look at over 400 cameras, which are statewide and digital. They can monitor traffic flow in real time.

Three-way stop installation in Magee

MAGEE, MS (WLBT) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation is installing a three-way stop at the intersection of State Route 541 and Raleigh Drive in Magee.

Wednesday at 9 a.m., MDOT crews will begin installing the three-way stop, according to a news release from MDOT.

Motorists should expect short delays while the appropriate signage and striping are being installed.

Fatal wreck on Highway 13

SIMPSON COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A 39-year-old man was killed in a car accident Friday afternoon on State Highway 13.

Tracy Dampier was reportedly driving on Highway 13 about two miles south of Shivers Road in Simpson County when one of his rear tires blew out. Dampier lost control of the vehicle causing it to run off the road and overturn, according to Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol.

Dampier was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He died at the scene.

Temporary lane closures on U.S. 49

SIMPSON COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation announced two upcoming road closures on U.S. 49 in Simpson County today.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 8, at 10 a.m., MDOT crews will temporarily close two sections of U.S. 49 between Magee and Mendenhall to install new utility lines.
